MONUMENT TO THE GREAT MIGRATION
From the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events:
Alison Saar’s bronze figure is a testament to the thousands of African Americans who migrated to Chicago in the early 20th century in search of greater freedom and opportunity. The traveler’s hand is raised in salutation to his new home. In his other hand he carries a worn suitcase symbolic of his journey, dreams and talents. The bollards surrounding the monument are also suitcases that are textured with a pattern derived from the tin ceilings of the era. The figure is oriented to the north, symbolizing the traveler’s destination.
The sculpture is located at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. & 26th Place.
THE STROLL BEER - BLACK HORIZON BREWING
Black Horizon Brewing chose the Monument to the Great Migration because it’s a structure that symbolizes the importance of the Bronzeville community and the vibrant life and culture along The Stroll located within those boundaries. A Bronze Ale made with maple and vanilla. 6% ABV.
The ingredients and connection: Black Horizon Brewing was inspired by the difficult, yet necessary, journey made by thousands of African Americans during the Great Migration (1910-1970). While a grueling endeavor, the end result was what created vibrant cultural communities, like the one in Bronzeville. The maple represents the general direction of the Great Migration, North. The vanilla represents something that the journey North was not, smooth and sweet.
