In 1788, the first fleet of soldiers and convicts (including a man named James Squire) arrived to establish a penal colony in Sydney, New South Wales. XXX, a beer, was introduced in the early 19th century to the continent. Its origins were based on English traditions, however, due to distance, world events, and local tastes, the beverage would evolve into the modern era as Australian OLD.

In this Brewseum happy hour chat, Australian beer historian Peter Symons provides a brief history of the development of Australian beer and brewing practices. Using Australian XXX beer as an example, Peter will discuss New South Wales beer history, how XXX compared to English beers of the same era, and how processes, ingredients and styles can change over time.
